La Música de Miércoles: Bailando
I have no idea how long I’ll be able to keep this up once classes start, but here goes - the first Música de Miércoles (literally Music of Wednesday, but let’s call it a Wednesday Wobble in the hopes you’ll jig around a little and let me keep up the corny titles!).
I’ve chosen a little bit of Enrique Iglesias (Harry Churches doesn’t sound quite as exotic, does it?!) to get us started - Bailando (Dancing).
Even as a beginner, you can enjoy it - don’t panic and try and translate every word: the words come up on screen on this particular video.
Suggestions for Learning
First and foremost, just enjoy it - over time your ear will become accustomed to listening to Spanish.
Absolute Beginners
Just enjoy the music. Really. Relax. Get used to hearing Spanish. It’s a beautiful, rythmic language. If you hate Latin music you may not enjoy it as much, but it’s less than five minutes, so go with it.
Try singing along - boom! You’re already speaking some Spanish.
Beginners
Listen through once and enjoy.
If you have the time to listen again, do it again, but this time read the words below, rather than watching them on screen. You’ll start to see some pronunciation, some vocabulary you may not know, and be reading in Spanish.
There’s no expectation for you to understand it all, but if you’re really dedicated, you can look up the vocabulary you don’t know.
Try singing along - and boom! You’re speaking/singing some Spanish.
Intermediate
Listen through using the words below, rather than watching the screen. It will help you identify words and pronunciation.
Don’t put pressure on yourself to understand it all - it can be hard to catch the words even in English on songs. But go back afterwards and look up the words you don’t understand.
Have a sing along. You’ll be practising your Spanish while you have some fun.
Advanced
As an advanced speaker, you direct your own learning, so some exercises might be:
to listen without looking at the words at all. What didn’t you catch? Go back and listen again.
find the vocabulary you don’t recognise and look it up/learn it
read the words out loud (or sing along) - great for practising your language.
Fluent Spanish Speakers
According to some sources “Bailando is about the intoxicating power of physical attraction and the desperate need to connect with someone who drives you to madness.” Do you agree?
