‘Tarjetas de regalo’. They’re controversial when it comes to gifting.

The Gift Card Controversy - Unravelled

On the one hand, gift cards can seem like a lazy present - last minute, or ‘didn’t know what to get’.

On the other, they avoid the ‘knitted toilet roll holder’ effect - the carefully selected gift that genuinely isn’t to the recipient’s taste.

In reality there are different classes of gift card. The great big ‘Amazon gift card’ which can be used for oh so much - useful but impersonal.

Or the more tailored ‘experience’ type gift card.

The latter of these is anything but thoughtless. Maybe someone wants to do something but the money is an issue. The giftcard makes that experience a little easier to obtain. And when friends/family each buy the same card, even better. Suddenly the activity or event becomes more accessible - or paid for.

The ‘Classes with Claire’ Giftcard

Newly available: the ‘Classes with Claire’ gift card.

There are a range of values available: £10, £25, £40, £60, £100, £120.

£10 would cover an online conversation class - great fun and carefully curated content.

£120 would cover a full in person course of eight classes (1.5 hours each, materials included).

The classes are fun, so the gift is doubled - learning or practising their Spanish AND a social event in the diary to look forward to!

(If you want a different value, contact us and we’ll add the option - ‘Classes with Claire’ is still small and able to accomodate this easily.)

Ideas for presenting your gift card

One of the downsides of presenting your gift card is that an email isn’t very exciting.

BUT get the email sent to you and you can still make it a physical present. A couple of ideas:

The big box ruse - Who doesn’t love a carefully wrapped gift? Pop the gift card in a very large box, wrapped and with ribbon; or lots of boxes, with the voucher at the end.

The scroll - Scrolls come to us at important moments in life. Winning an award at the sport’s club. Qualifying. Graduating. Marriage certificates. So roll your gift card, secure it with ribbon and a tag, and the curiosity factor as well as the gift will bring extra pleasure.

The hamper - Hampers can start to get expensive if you’re a Fortnum and Mason or Harrods buff. But it’s also possible to create a little intrigue with a box or basket with a few obviously Spanish contents - Spanish wine, chorizo, Spanish cheese…. just a few bits will give a Spanish feel, with the gift ‘card’ in a pretty envelope alongside.

The fan - This one needs a bit of dexterity, but take a fan (abanico) and fold the gift card into it, closed. This works best where the fan is boxed as the extra volume means the fan won’t close as closely.

‘Thank you’ etiquette

If you’ve been given a card, it’s important to say thank you.

A little note or a recorded ‘gracias’ goes a long way. Tell them how you redeemed it.

Right now, ‘Classes with Claire’ is small and in ‘start up’ mode, so feel free to ask for photos or videos in class, or help crafting a special Spanish thank you. Who knows - your class may even want to help, making it a chance to all practise our Spanish in a meaningful way.

No expiry date

I can’t be the only one with a drawer full of expired gift cards!

Your gift card won’t have an expiry date, unlike store cards. For as long as ‘Classes with Claire’ exists, so will your gift card, until it’s redeemed.

So the recipent can choose the class they want or wait until something comes along that takes their fancy.
